Why Revision Should Be Built Into Assessment Design

Student revision feedback is most useful when an assessment gives learners time, guidance, and a clear route to act on it. Build a purposeful feedback loop, a transparent resubmission policy, and simple evidence of improvement into the task from the start.

Assessment is often treated as the end of learning: students submit work, teachers judge it, grades are recorded, and the class moves on. That model can be necessary for some high-stakes decisions, but it leaves little room for students to use feedback while the learning is still actionable.

A stronger design treats assessment as part of the learning process. Students attempt a task, receive student revision feedback, decide what needs to change, revise, and show what improved. The teacher still makes the professional judgement about quality and grading, but the assessment now captures more than a first attempt. This matters because feedback is not automatically helpful simply because it is given. Design the feedback loop before setting the task

  1. Define a small number of assessable learning goals. State what students should know, understand, or be able to do. For example, a history task might assess the use of evidence to support an argument, rather than vaguely asking for an “excellent essay.”

Write a resubmission policy students can understand

A resubmission policy is not simply a generosity policy. It is an instructional agreement: students receive a defined opportunity to act on feedback, and they are responsible for showing purposeful revision. Clear boundaries protect teacher time and reduce uncertainty for students and families.

A workable policy should answer the following questions.

  • Which tasks can be revised? Prioritise tasks where revision reveals important learning, rather than automatically reopening every short quiz or routine exercise.
  • What is the window for revision? Set a reasonable deadline that fits the pace of the course and leaves time for the student to act.
  • What feedback is available? Specify whether students receive teacher feedback, peer feedback, self-assessment prompts, a rubric, a conference, or a combination.
  • What must the student submit? Require the revised work plus a concise explanation of the changes. This prevents a resubmission from becoming a replacement attempt with no evidence of reflection.
  • How will the work be evaluated? State whether the revised version replaces the earlier score, contributes to a portfolio, is capped, or is assessed against specified criteria. Align this decision with your organisation’s own assessment requirements.
  • How many cycles are available? One well-supported revision cycle is often more manageable than unlimited rounds. More attempts may be appropriate for mastery-oriented practice, but they need a realistic review process.

Revision should be designed as a response to feedback, not as an invitation to endlessly negotiate a mark.

For course creators and education businesses, consistency matters across tutors and cohorts. A shared resubmission template, common rubric language, and agreed turnaround expectations can make the experience clearer without forcing every teacher to give identical feedback.

Collect evidence of improvement, not just a new version

If revision is part of the assessment design, the evidence should show more than the final product. The teacher needs enough information to see whether a student identified an issue, acted on feedback, and improved in relation to the learning goal.

A simple evidence set can include:

  • the first attempt or a selected extract from it;
  • the feedback, rubric indicators, or conference target;
  • the revised attempt;
  • a student revision note explaining the most important change;
  • the teacher’s final judgement against the relevant criteria.

This does not mean storing every draft forever. Choose evidence proportionate to the task. For a short maths explanation, a before-and-after response plus one sentence of reflection may be sufficient. Over time, this evidence also helps teachers spot patterns. If many students revise sentence-level errors but not weak reasoning, the next lesson may need more modelling of reasoning. Keep revision manageable and equitable

The value of revision does not require teachers to write extensive comments on every submission. In fact, feedback systems should be sustainable. Use selective strategies to protect time: give whole-class feedback on common patterns, choose one or two priority criteria per cycle, build in structured peer review, schedule short conferences, or ask students to self-assess against the rubric before requesting help. Peer and self-assessment need clear criteria and modelling; they are not a substitute for teacher judgement, but they can help students notice quality and prepare for revision.

Equity also needs deliberate attention. Students vary in the time, confidence, language support, technology access, and prior experience they can bring to revision. Build revision time into class or supported study where possible, provide accessible formats for feedback, and teach students how to interpret comments. A policy that exists only for students who can stay late, obtain outside help, or confidently ask for another chance may widen rather than reduce differences in opportunity.

Start with one assessment cycle

You do not need to redesign an entire programme at once. Choose one consequential task where students commonly make revisable mistakes. Identify two or three learning goals, create a checkpoint, plan feedback around a small number of decisions, and require a short revision note with the resubmission. Then review both the student work and the workload created.
