When you add live feedback to an online course, you are no longer pricing only videos, worksheets, and access. You are also selling a limited share of your professional time. That distinction matters because course access can usually be delivered to many learners at once, while feedback creates a delivery commitment for every additional enrolment.

This is especially relevant for tutors building online offers for the 2026/27 academic year. Families and learners continue to use learning outside conventional classrooms: an NCES release on instruction at home reported that 5.2% of U.S. children ages 5 to 17 received academic instruction at home in 2022–23, up from 3.7% in 2018–19. More recent reporting also described more than 600,000 public-school students attending fully virtual schools in 2024–25. That reporting notes the growth of fully virtual-school enrolment, while also cautioning that online provision is not automatically high quality.

The answer is not to promise unlimited access in order to make a course feel valuable. It is to design a clear offer, calculate the feedback capacity you can genuinely protect, and make the price reflect both the reusable course and the human work.

Why live feedback changes course economics

A self-paced course has upfront work: planning, recording, editing, updating, administration, and learner support. Once it exists, however, another learner can often receive the core materials with little extra delivery time.

Live feedback behaves differently. Whether it is an annotated essay, a marked problem set, an audio response, an office hour, or a short coaching call, each learner creates a time demand. If 30 learners each receive 20 minutes of feedback, that is 10 hours of feedback before scheduling, preparation, follow-up, and administration.

So price the offer as two connected parts:

Scalable course access: the reusable learning pathway, resources, and standard communications.
Bounded feedback capacity: a specified amount of tutor attention, available within a stated service period.

This framing helps you avoid two common errors: charging as though the course were entirely self-paced, or treating every sale as a full hourly tutoring relationship.

Define the offer before setting the price

Learners should be able to tell, before purchase, what they receive and what they do not. A good scope statement answers four questions.

What course access is included? Name the modules, resources, access period, and any updates included during that period.
What feedback format is included? For example: written comments on one assignment, a five-minute audio review, two 15-minute calls, or feedback on a defined number of quiz attempts.
When will learners receive it? State a response window in business days or calendar days and any scheduled call times.
What are the limits? Define the number of submissions, maximum length or task type, booking rules, resubmission policy, and end date for unused feedback.

Specificity is kinder than vague generosity. “Personal support included” can mean very different things to a learner and a tutor. “One annotated response of up to 1,200 words, returned within seven calendar days” is easier to understand, schedule, and deliver.

Calculate delivery capacity before choosing a price

Start with the number of feedback hours you can sustainably provide during the cohort or service period. Do not begin with a hoped-for enrolment figure or a competitor’s headline price.

Use this simple capacity check:

Total feedback hours = expected enrolments × feedback minutes per learner ÷ 60

Available feedback hours = weekly feedback availability × number of service weeks

Your planned total feedback hours should be below your available hours, not equal to them. Leave room for scheduling changes, learner questions, technical issues, more complex submissions, and your other responsibilities. If the plan only works when every week is perfectly efficient, the offer is too tight.

For example, suppose you expect 24 learners and include 25 minutes of feedback per learner. That creates 10 feedback hours. If you can protect two feedback hours per week over six weeks, you have 12 hours available. The offer may be workable, but only if the 25-minute estimate includes the full activity: reading or reviewing, preparing comments, delivering them, and logging completion.

In this example, the proposed price of 120 sits above the calculated floor of 83.90 and the planned workload remains within the stated capacity. That does not prove it is the best market price. It simply means the offer passes two important internal checks: the economics are visible, and the promised feedback fits the available time.

If your proposed price falls below the floor, you have several choices: reduce fixed costs, increase expected enrolments only if capacity permits, reduce the included feedback, shorten the feedback format, introduce paid feedback credits, raise the price, or revise the target earnings. Do not solve a capacity problem by assuming you will work faster than you have historically worked.

Choose a feedback structure that matches your capacity

Option 1: Include one defined feedback entitlement

This works well when the course has a clear assessed task. The learner pays one price and receives a named feedback item. It is simple to explain and provides a strong completion milestone.

Option 2: Sell feedback credits alongside course access

This separates the core course price from limited tutor time. Learners who want independent study can buy access alone; learners who want more support can purchase credits. Credits work best when each credit has a plainly stated use and expiry date.

Option 3: Create a higher-touch tier

A tiered offer can suit a mixed cohort without turning the standard course into an unlimited-support promise. The higher tier should have a cap, an enrolment limit, or both.

Write boundaries learners can trust

Boundaries are not hidden exclusions; they are delivery promises you can keep. Put them on the sales page, in the welcome message, and near the submission or booking process.

Say what counts as a submission and what formats you accept.
State maximum word counts, pages, questions, or recording length.
Give a response window rather than implying an instant reply.
Explain how calls are booked, rescheduled, or missed.
State whether feedback is formative guidance, model answers, marking against a named rubric, or something else.
Clarify that individual feedback does not include ongoing messaging, extra submissions, or work outside the published scope unless separately purchased.
For courses serving under-18s, align communications, data handling, and contact arrangements with your organisation’s safeguarding and privacy procedures.

You can still be warm. For example: “If you need a different kind of help, contact us before purchasing a credit so we can confirm the most suitable option.” This is more useful than silently absorbing requests that sit outside the course design.

Test with a small cohort, then review the evidence

Before scaling, run a small cohort with the same scope you intend to sell later. Track the numbers that affect both learner experience and tutor workload: enrolments, completion of the feedback task, average minutes per learner, response-time performance, no-shows, credit use, common questions, refunds or cancellations, and the revenue left after your stated costs.

After the cohort, compare actual feedback time with the assumption in your calculator. If a “20-minute” response routinely takes 35 minutes because submissions are unclear or learners need more context, revise the task design, instructions, cap, price, or feedback allowance. The aim is not to minimise support. It is to make the support dependable.

Set up a workable course and feedback workflow

Keep the workflow simple: publish the course pathway, create one submission or booking route, record feedback entitlements, set a response-date queue, and use a completion checklist.
